Berkeley County

Berkeley County does not issue and or require a business license, however many of the municipalities do.

All property used in any business shall be returned for taxation and taxed in the county, city, and town in which it is situated.

§ 110.001 LICENSE REQUIRED.

   Every person engaged or intending to engage in any business, calling, occupation, profession, or activity engaged in with the object of gain, benefit, or advantage, in whole or in part within the limits of the City of Goose Creek, South Carolina, is required to pay an annual license tax for the privilege of doing business and obtain a business license as herein provided.

As regulated by state and county ordinances, the Business License office is responsible for processing Business License applications, renewals, and appeals within the unincorporated areas of Dorchester County.

Dorchester County requires every person engaged or intending to engage in any calling, business, occupation or profession, in whole or in part, in unincorporated Dorchester County to obtain a business license.

The business license fee is based on the Class Rate associated with the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS Code to Class Index) and Class Rate for your business activity and gross receipts or gross estimate is used to calculate the business license fee. For gross in excess of one million dollars ($1,000,000), the declining rates are used. Please contact the business license office for assistance in calculating the fees.

The business license year begins May 1 and expires April 30 for all businesses. For non-payment of all or any part of the correct license tax, the License Official shall levy and collect a late penalty of five (5%) percent of the unpaid tax for each month or portion thereof after the due date until paid. Penalties shall not be waived.

the object of gain, benefit, or advantage, in whole or in part, within the limits of the Town of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

("town"), is required to pay an annual license tax for the privilege of doing business, and obtain a business license as herein

provided.

Pursuant to Sullivan’s Island’s Town Codes & Ordinances (Section 10-1) every person engaged, or intending to engage, in business within the Town of Sullivan’s Island is required to obtain an annual Sullivan’s Island Business License. The annual Sullivan’s Island business license is active from May 1st through April 30th. If you do not make your license payment before April 30th, you will be charged a 5% penalty fee for every month you are late.

All contractors who engage in work on the Island are verified through the South Carolina Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation (LLR). Contractors are to update their license on a per job basis based on the contract value of the job. When renewing your 2023 license, please complete the Town of Sullivan's Island Business License Application and the Contractors Ordinance . If you update your license per job, your license update is good until the job is complete. If your company provides service work such as maintenance, warranty work, minor repairs, etc. you will need to pay the initial license based on the gross income from these services. When requesting a license update, complete the Business License update request and submit a proposal, estimate, or scope of work as proof of income. All license updates are based on the total contract amount, labor and materials included.

All landscapers are required to purchase an annual Sullivan’s Island Business License. Landscapers are required to complete the Town of Sullivan's Island Business License Application and the Landscaping Policy Agreement (PDF).  Effective January 1, 2020, if you are conducting any kind of work that requires permitting such as tree removals, hardscapes, driveways, fences, etc., you will be required to update your license per every job before the work is to begin. Your annual license fee will be based on basic services such as lawn maintenance, debris cleanup, tree pruning, etc.
